Israel Allows Limited Deployment of Syrian Forces in Suwayda

Israel has reportedly agreed to a limited deployment of Syrian government forces in Suwayda governorate over the next 48 hours, following violent clashes between local Druze factions and tribal fighters.

On Friday, July 18, Reuters quoted an unnamed Israeli official who stated that Israel had approved a limited entry of Syria’s Internal Security Forces over the next 48 hours in response to what the official described as “ongoing instability” and “days of bloodshed.”

Meanwhile, the Syrian government is engaged in negotiations with local factions and Druze community leaders in Suwayda to secure full access to the governorate. This follows a request by local groups for the state to help end the conflict in the western countryside, where clashes have erupted between local factions and armed tribal groups.

The Public Relations Office at the Ministry of Interior denied to Enab Baladi on Friday that any security forces were preparing to enter Suwayda to restore order.

In parallel, convoys of the Syrian General Security Forces have been spotted heading south in what appears to be a new effort to separate the warring sides after a renewed wave of mutual violations between tribal fighters and Druze factions.

Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Daraa reported that a convoy carrying security forces is currently in southern Syria, though there is no confirmation regarding its destination or whether it will enter Suwayda or remain near its outskirts to act as a buffer between the sides.

    Following a mobilization

Suwayda has witnessed armed clashes since Thursday between local Druze factions and Bedouin tribal fighters from within the region, joined by others from outside the governorate.

The escalation followed Arab tribal mobilization triggered by reports of abuses allegedly committed by fighters affiliated with the spiritual leader of the Druze community, Hikmat al-Hijri, targeting tribal residents of the area.

In response, tribal fighters committed violations, including burning homes in mostly empty villages, citing earlier abuses by local factions.

The tension stems from earlier incidents of mutual kidnappings between tribal groups and local factions on the outskirts of Suwayda, which escalated into armed clashes and prompted the intervention of Syrian Defense and Interior Ministry forces.

Although a temporary agreement was reached, the entry of government forces was met with resistance by local factions. This was followed by Israeli airstrikes targeting various governorates in Syria, further aggravating the security situation.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) documented the killing of at least 321 people, including six children and nine women (one of whom died of a heart attack after learning of her grandson’s death), along with over 436 injuries of varying severity in Suwayda between July 13 and July 18.

The preliminary toll includes civilians—children, women, and medical staff—alongside fighters from armed Bedouin tribal groups, local non-state factions from Suwayda, and personnel from the Internal Security Forces and the Ministry of Defense affiliated with the Syrian transitional government.
