Manny Pacquiao comeback undercard hit by last-minute setback as boxer withdraws on eve of fight

Angel Fierro has been forced to pull out of his rematch with Isaac Cruz on Saturday night.

The rivals were set to square off in a super lightweight clash on the Manny Pacquiao vs Mario Barrios undercard at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

However, Fierro has been deemed unfit to compete after being taken to hospital due to health issues relating to his weight cut.

Former WBA super lightweight champion Cruz (27-3-1) defeated Fierro (23-3-2) via unanimous decision five months ago in a hard-fought contest that was so entertaining it warranted an immediate sequel.

Yet, organisers are now turning their attention to matching Cruz up with a new opponent.

Omar Salcido (20-2), who is scheduled to face Brian Gallegos (8-1) on the same bill, is said to be the frontrunner.

Salcido successfully made the 140lbs super lightweight limit earlier today, and according to multiple reports, negotiations are underway for him to box Cruz in a last-minute switch.

“It’s a big opportunity. We’re ready. We’re excited,” Salcido’s trainer Jose Benavidez Sr told Boxing Scene.

“We’re just waiting on them [Premier Boxing Champions] to get it done.”

The rest of the bill remains unchanged at the time of writing, with Pacquiao set to take on Barrios for the WBC welterweight title in the main event.

If the Filipino legend can overcome the odds and get his hand raised at 46 years old, then he will become the second-oldest boxing world champion in the history of the sport.

Several members of the boxing fraternity have expressed concerns over the staggering 16-year age gap between Pacquiao and Barrios.

talkSPORT’s Spencer Oliver has been one of the most outspoken pundits on the topic.

“Pacquiao looked a shell of his former self in his last fight against Ugas,” he said.

“He has had a long career and turned pro in 1995; he’s great, but he’s coming back now.

“But the biggest disgrace of this is that the WBC are sanctioning the fight for a world title, which is just wrong.

“I think it’s a young man’s sport, the inactivity and way he performed in his last fight. I don’t like it.

“Let’s just leave it there. But the governing bodies should only sanction fights if they are in the top fifteen.

“He’s been retired for four years, so how does that warrant him jumping the queue and fighting Barrios?

“It’s wrong in so many ways. The system is broken with the WBC allowing that to happen.”
