Conor Benn believes Chris Eubank Jr’s career should be over if he doesn’t rematch him.
As they agreed to reignite the family feud on April 26, stemming from their fathers Chris Eubank Snr and Nigel Benn, there was a rematch clause in place.
Immediately after their grudge match ended, Turki Alalshikh announced that the rematch would be held in September at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Speculation grew around the exact date as the Premier League fixtures were announced.
Progress appeared to be being made as it was recently announced to be September 20 in London, despite no confirmation from Eubank.
Following his win, Eubank was hospitalised due to severe dehydration, having narrowly made the 170lbs rehydration weight for the bout.
Eubank’s promoter Ben Shalom has been pushing for a weight change ahead of their rematch.
Although the 35-year-old is said to be more concerned about the proximity of the rematch date, rather than the weight stipulations for it.
Speaking with Sky Sports News, Benn has now urged his rival to retire instead of pursuing a rematch at a later date.
He said: “Take it, take it. Just take the win. Take the win. Your dad didn’t want the rematch of my dad,” he said.
“Sail off into the sunset. You’re done, and you move on, and I move on and secure my legacy of winning the world title.
“I definitely want redemption [against Eubank Jr]. It really does feel like redemption has been taken away. But I’m definitely excited to drop back down and pursue my legacy there.”
Eubank sustained a cut above his eye during the boutMark Robinson / Matchroom BoxingEubank has yet to comment on the situation regarding a rematch, but has also yet to sign his side of the deal.
The Briton’s manager surprisingly suggested it could still be a possibility and a deal could be salvaged.
Their first fight ended in Eubank defeating Benn via unanimous decision.
Despite the rematch being the expected next bout for the 35-year-old, he has expressed an interest elsewhere.
Last month on talkSPORT’s Fight Night Daily Podcast Elliott Amoakoh, who handles Eubank, explained that a fight between Eubank and Canelo Alvarez is realistic.
Amoakoh revealed that Alalshikh would use his influence to secure Eubank a title shot if he plans to face Canelo at 160lbs.
Although the initial talks were dependent on Eubank defeating Benn for a second time, even if the rematch doesn’t go ahead it’s unlikely that Eubank would retire before his chance to fight Canelo.
Benn might not get his shot at revengeGettyNot only did Benn suggest that Eubank retire, he announced that he will not wait to reschedule a rematch.
He explained: “I’m not waiting. I’m not waiting around. I feel like my career has sort of been on hold to give the fans this fight, and I’m glad that the fight delivered, but now I’ve got to just tick the box off on my personal goals, which is winning a WBC world title.
“It’s either [moving back down to] 147lbs for me or the rematch.
“I’m ready to honour my side of the agreement, which was a two-fight deal [at middleweight] and it’s safe to say he’s scared. He almost lost. It could have gone either way. To a welterweight.”
