After a quick response to finding a handgun on a public sidewalk, a group of Wauconda teens was treated to a frozen dessert.
Four local teens discovered a handgun while riding their bikes near the Route 12 underpass at Route 176 on Wednesday, according to a Wauconda Police Department news release. Two of the boys remained at the scene while the others biked to the police department to report the firearm, the department said.
After officers recovered the unloaded handgun, Wauconda Police Chief David Wermes bought the group ice cream at Dairy Queen as a token of appreciation for “a big act of civic duty,” according to the release.
“The bravery and common sense these young men showed is truly commendable,” Wermes said in the release. “They turned a potentially dangerous situation into an example of community responsibility.”
The department posted the release to Facebook, expressing their pride in the teens’ “maturity, courage and quick thinking.”
According to the department, the weapon, a Colt .25 caliber automatic handgun, was secured as evidence for further investigation. The department urged anyone with knowledge about the gun to call the police department at 847-526-2421.
