The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground delay at Denver International Airport on Wednesday for thunderstorms, preventing hundreds of flights from leaving the gate on time, according to the agency.
Severe thunderstorms are forecast for the Interstate 25 corridor, including Denver and DIA, throughout Wednesday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service.
Potential impacts include large hail, damaging winds, heavy rain and tornadoes, weather service forecasters said.
As of 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, flights in and out of DIA were experiencing average delays of nearly 90 minutes, according to the FAA.
Those delays are expected to reach up to 110 minutes by 7 p.m. as weather continues in the area, FAA officials said in the ground delay advisory.
At 2:20 p.m., 531 flights had already been delayed and eight had been canceled, according to flight tracking data from FlightAware.
Southwest had delayed the most flights at 256, followed by 142 United flights, according to FlightAware. Southwest also canceled seven flights, followed by one from Delta.
