President Trump on Wednesday afternoon will sign legislation that aims to curb the illicit flow of fentanyl into the U.S. during a bill-signing ceremony.
The bill — the Halt All Lethal Trafficking of Fentanyl Act or HALT Fentanyl Act — will reschedule the opioid as a Schedule I drug, which could result in harsher penalties for those convicted of fentanyl-related offenses.
"Going to the White House today to join President Trump as he signs my HALT Fentanyl Act into law!" Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) wrote on social platform X earlier Tuesday. "The fentanyl crisis is driving overdose deaths across our nation. Proud to join the President in taking this step to protect our communities."
The Biden administration backed the bill, but it stalled in the previous Democratic-controlled Senate. During Trump's first term, fentanyl analogues were temporarily classified under Schedule I — a category reserved for the most dangerous drugs.
The crackdown on trafficking of the opioid has also been a major proponent in the Trump administration's trade agenda.
The event in the East Room is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. EDT.
