Vice President JD Vance had to break a tie, 51-50, to move the rescissions package to the floor. Three Republicans — Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) joined with all Democrats and independents against it .The final vote is going to be in the next couple of days. Trump’s White House sought out the package of cancellations that also rolls back billions of dollars of funding for foreign aid and health programs. The set of bills seeks to revoke over $9 billion in allocated funds.
Washington — The Senate narrowly advanced appeal from the White House to talon back billions in funds for international aid and public broadcasting, as Congress faces a Friday deadline to act.
The demand, known as a repeals package, cleared its first procedural hurdles, with the help of Vice President JD Vance. The vice president cast two tie breaking voted after three Republicans joined all Democrats in opposing it.
In June, the White House demand that Congress cancel $9.4 billion in funding that had previously been approved for spending, starting the process that gives lawmakers 45 days to act. If both chambers did not approve an identical package before the deadline, the funding that going to be spent as planned.
The legislation attempts to make permanent some of the Department of Government Efficiency's spending cuts, with the primary focus being slashing foreign aid. However, it would also effectively cut off federal funding for NPR and PBS.
In summary, the final vote in the Senate would occur and bill would then return to the House for another vote before it would go to the US president’s desk for his signature.
