Killer who murdered British backpacker in Australia dies in jail

The man who killed British backpacker Peter Falconio and tried to kidnap his girlfriend in the Australian outback more than 20 years ago has died in prison, local media has reported.

67-year-old Bradley Murdoch was serving a life sentence over the killing of Mr Falconio and the abduction of Joanne Lees, in a case which drew worldwide attention.

The Sydney Morning Herald says the cause of death was throat cancer.

Murdoch died without revealing the location of Mr Falconio’s body, despite numerous attempts from local police to have him reveal the information.

The 28-year-old was shot dead as he and Ms Lees drove through the outback north of Alice Springs, in Australia’s Northern Territory, on 14 July 2001.

Murdoch flagged them down, telling them there was something wrong with his car. As Mr Falconio got out to investigate, he was killed, and Murdoch tied Ms Lees’ hands with zip ties and put a bag over her head.

But she managed to escape, hiding in bushes for five hours while he hunted her down with a dog.

The case became an international media frenzy, and initially Ms Lees was suspected of killing her boyfriend by many members of the Australian public.

But that was wrong, and Murdoch was convicted of Mr Falconio’s killing in 2005.

Only last month, police in the Northern Territory increased the cash reward to $500,000 for information which could lead to the discovery of Mr Falconio’s body.

“We recognise the passage of time that’s transpired, however it’s never too late to reach out and start that conversation with police,” Northern Territory Police Acting Commander Mark Grieve told a press conference on June 25.

“You just never know how beneficial that information that you may hold, may be — essentially, you just don’t know what you know.”
