Research shows the cost of purchasing an electric vehicle and the perception that there are not enough charging points are two key reasons drivers are hesitant about making the switch from a petrol or diesel vehicle to an electric one.
Drivers across the UK will soon enjoy discounts on dozens of new electric car models after the Transport Secretary announced a £650m grant scheme worth up to £3,750 per car on Tuesday.
The incentive is part of the Government’s plan to make owning an electric car a reality for thousands.
Alongside measures that aim to address the financial barriers to electric vehicle ownership, ministers have also been working to improve the network of chargepoints across the country, with one added every 30 minutes.

Which area has the most electric vehicle charging points?
London has the highest number of electric charging devices per 100,000 people, with Hammersmith and Fulham leading the way with 1,444 per 100,000, followed by Westminster with 1,279 and the City of London with 756. Coventry has the fourth highest number of electric chargers perv 100,000 people with 695.
On its website, Hammersmith and Fulham council says it has “delivered the densest network of on-street charging points in the country” – almost 2,800 across the borough – to support residents in accessing “convenient, cost effective and accessible charge points close to their home”.
At the other end of the scale, Castle Point in Essex has the lowest number of charging points per 100,000, with just 17, while North East Derbyshire and Fenland in Cambridgeshire have 20 and Derry City and Strabane in Northern Ireland has 22.
Research by AA, which has warned more needs to be done to make electric vehicles accessible to everyone, has shown affordability of electric vehicles is vital.
AA president, Edmund King, has said the barriers of charging points also need to be overcome to give drivers the confidence to switch to electric vehicles.
Its 2025 AA study found 40 per cent of drivers do not have access to home charging. Additionally, 72 per cent of drivers cited “inconvenience” as a major disadvantage of electric vehicles.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said with “over 82,000 public chargepoints now available across the UK” the Government has “built the infrastructure families need to make the switch with confidence”.
And the Government has said that figure is due to grow significantly in the years to come.
Last month, Future of Roads Minister, Lilian Greenwood, confirmed that government and industry are expected to install over 100,000 local chargepoints in the coming years, thanks to the existing government funding from the £381m Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund.
In addition, an expected £6bn in private investment is set to see tens of thousands of chargepoints installed by 2030.
At the end of June 2025, there were 82,369 electric vehicle charging points across the UK, across 40,479 charging locations. There were 76,507 charging devices in place as of 1 April.
Rapid charges, which offer significantly faster charging, and Ultra-rapid chargers – the fastest way to charge an electric vehicle, often found at motorway services or locations close to main routes – only make up around 20 per cent of total devices, but they account for around 60 per cent of the total capacity.
