Defense Ministry Outlines Steps to ‘Resolve’ Suwayda File

On Monday, July 14, the Syrian Ministry of Defense released a video statement by its spokesperson, Colonel Hassan Abdel-Ghany, addressing the latest developments on the ground in Suwayda province.

Abdel-Ghany said the ongoing events are a direct result of the institutional and administrative vacuum in the province over the past several months, which has created space for chaos and a breakdown in security.

He explained that the Ministry of Defense, in coordination with the Interior Ministry, deployed military and security reinforcements to the area “to halt the clashes and restore control,” while maintaining ongoing coordination and communication with local dignitaries and residents.

During their operations, army units were attacked by what he described as an “armed outlaw group,” resulting in the deaths of 18 soldiers and injuries to several others, according to Abdel-Ghany.

The Defense Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the security of the nation and its citizens, vowing to “end these senseless clashes and pursue all outlaw groups.”

Colonel Abdel-Ghany addressed the people of Suwayda directly, assuring them that their safety, dignity, and livelihoods are a sacred trust. He emphasized that the Syrian Armed Forces will remain a bulwark against chaos and a guarantor of national security and stability.

According to Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Daraa, the Ministry of Defense has taken control of several areas in western Suwayda, including Mazraa, Thaala, and Tal al-Hadeed.

Meanwhile, Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Suwayda reported that warplanes were heard flying over Suwayda and Daraa. One airstrike reportedly targeted an area near Mazraa, though the specific location and responsible party remain unconfirmed.

In a separate message on X, Defense Minister General Murhaf Abu Qusra instructed Syrian army forces to protect civilians in Suwayda and “shield them from criminal gangs seeking to harm them and destabilize their security.”

“Protect public and private property from thieves and opportunists,” Abu Qusra said. “Every act of negligence will be recorded, and every failure will be held accountable. Work to restore stability in Suwayda and support those in need, as you have always been the people’s protectors.”

    Calls for Ceasefire

In contrast, the Spiritual Leadership of the Druze Muslim community issued a statement reiterating that it had called for a ceasefire and de-escalation from the very beginning, saying it had never sought bloodshed.

The statement demanded an immediate end to “bloodshed, forced attacks, and the storming of villages and properties.” It added, “Our hands remain extended for reconciliation and healing.”

The leadership expressed its rejection of any “takfiri, unruly, or lawless factions,” clarifying that it supports the rule of law and state authority. It added, “From the beginning, we had no objection to organizing the province and establishing local policing made up of honorable residents.”

The statement also emphasized that “those fighting and killing our people are not our enemies, and this is not our battle. We stand for peace, dialogue, and diplomatic solutions that preserve the rights, dignity, and livelihoods of our people.”

The spiritual leadership reaffirmed its cooperative relationship with the current government, noting that it “has not been and will not be severed.”

Interior and Foreign Ministries Monitor Developments

The Interior and Foreign Ministries also issued separate statements on Monday addressing the latest developments in Suwayda.

The Interior Ministry stated that the deployment of Internal Security Forces and Defense Ministry units to Suwayda was part of a “national mission to halt bloodshed, restore order, and impose stability,” following the rapid escalation of events in recent days.

It extended condolences to the families of the victims, describing the events as “a serious threat to civil peace and public security that violates the law and the values of unity and coexistence which form the foundation of the Syrian state.”

The ministry emphasized that its role is limited to preserving security and protecting civilians without siding with any party, while working to fully restore stability and safeguard lives.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates expressed its concern in a statement posted on Facebook over the recent escalation in Suwayda province, following armed clashes that erupted yesterday between outlaw groups from within the province and gunmen from neighboring areas.

The ministry said the violence left dozens dead or injured, including civilians, and caused widespread panic and disruption among peaceful residents.

It added that Syrian security forces performing their duty to protect lives and property were subjected to ambushes and kidnappings—evidence, the ministry argued, of organized actors trying to drag the province into dangerous instability and prevent the state from fulfilling its role.

The Foreign Ministry affirmed its commitment to wisdom and restraint, calling on all local actors to act rationally, immediately cease violence, surrender unauthorized weapons, and thwart the plans of those seeking to sow division and undermine Syria’s social fabric.

The Damascus–Suwayda highway saw a mobilization of local groups from Suwayda after a civilian was assaulted and robbed on Saturday, July 12. The incident triggered clashes in the province between local factions and tribal fighters, prior to the intervention of army and security forces.
