Trump is supplying weapons to Ukraine and has vowed to impose sanctions on states that import Russian oil

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a deal to send more weapons to Ukraine and has threatened to impose steep tariffs on Russia unless a peace deal is reached within 50 days.

The statements marked a significant policy shift for the U.S., coming only weeks after the Pentagon declared it would suspend weapons shipments to Ukraine.

Yet Trump has become more and more frustrated with Russian President Vladimir Putin, believing that providing these weapons could help bring a quicker end to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, now ongoing for more than three years.

Linked, these actions represent a significantly different strategy toward the conflict, one that Trump has tried to separate himself from since assuming office in January. Despite making the announcement, the president maintained that he was not responsible for the ongoing war.

President Trump’s plan, which calls for European nations to purchase American weapons and subsequently transfer them to Ukraine, has been under consideration for several months. This dialogue started soon after Trump’s election last year, as European officials sought ways to continue the supply of US arms to Ukraine despite the incoming administration’s pledge to scale back American support.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he had a “very good conversation” with Trump and that the pair had agreed to catch up more often by phone.

President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his gratitude to the team and to the United States, Germany, and Norway for arranging a new decision regarding Patriots for Ukraine. He also mentioned that they are actively pursuing significant defense agreements with the United States.

Whitaker, the US NATO envoy, states that the immediate focus for sending weapons to Ukraine is on defensive systems like Patriot missile batteries that can intercept Russian ballistic missiles. Nevertheless, he did not rule out the option of providing offensive weapons down the line.

In summary, securing more Patriot missile batteries is a major achievement for Ukraine. The risk of losing these vital air defense systems has been a serious worry, given their crucial role in protecting millions of Ukrainian civilians.
