When it comes to winning on the soccer field, strong goaltending goes a long way.
For the Crusaders Soccer Club, putting great effort into the net is something the program regularly focuses on.
Victor Melendez, the director of coaching for the Crusaders, has assembled a strong goalkeeper coaching staff featuring Varuzhan Hovhanesian, Jesus Serrano, and Chava Manzo.
“At Crusaders every day we strive to offer an increasingly complete and functional program,” Melendez said.
“Our objective this season is to have the most important goalkeeping program in San Diego. We signed one of the best goalkeeping coaches, Varuzhian Hovhanesian. He is a San Diegan with international experience. He played two years in Spain for Real Oviedo in the 2nd division and is now our goalkeeping program coordinator. “
Last month, Melendez says, Professor Salvador Manzo was added to the mix.
“Manzo has a long history in small-sided soccer such as Fut7, futsal and mini-soccer, and being part of the coaching staff with the Mexican national team which participated in the 2022 Dubai World Cup,” Melendez said.
“The third goalkeeping coach is Professor Jesus Serrano, a university goalkeeper and Olympic high jumping athlete, participating in University and Central American Games and obtaining several gold and silver medals in these competitions. Serrano will be teaching technical principles for goalkeepers, focusing on the mechanics and coordinating motor development of our goalkeepers.”
“My goal is to help the goalkeeper grow by developing technical, physical, and tactical fundamentals both on and off the field, while never forgetting humility, being a good human being, and always guiding their life with strong values, respect for their family, and the Crusaders family,” Serrano added. “Players should try the impossible in pursuit of their goals and to become a better person every single day.”
“My role, as a goalkeeper coach is to train our goalkeepers in essential skills like shot-stopping, positioning, and distribution,” said Manzo. “Focus on developing technique, agility, and decision-making through drills and game scenarios. We build confidence, mental resilience, and teamwork, tailoring instruction to each player’s age and skill level. Analyze performance, provide feedback, and ensure a safe, supportive environment, helping our goalkeepers grow to be competent, and confident while emphasizing sportsmanship and discipline.”
“Our goalkeeper program is designed to develop confident, technically sound, and game-ready goalkeepers,” Hovhanesian added. “Through focused weekly training sessions, we provide individualized coaching on positioning, shot-stopping, distribution, and communication. Led by experienced goalkeeper coaches, the program supports players of all ages and levels—helping them grow in skill, confidence, and leadership between the posts.”
