Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels will have a brand new team this season. The Rebels return just 3 starters on offense and 2 on defense, which means they had to turn to the transfer portal once again to address their roster.
Kiffin has been labeled a king of the transfer portal after putting together a fantastic class last season. But that doesn’t necessarily mean he likes going that route; he actually believes the mass turnover is a bad thing for the sport of college football. During SEC Media Days on Monday, Kiffin had the following to say:
“We basically restart each of these last few years because the turnover is so much in college football. I wish it wasn’t that way, and it shouldn’t be,” Kiffin said, via TexAgs. “It’s not good for all these kids to switch schools every year. It just makes us restart and expect that they don’t know anything because they’re coming from all these different places.”
There is certainly some truth to what Kiffin is saying. Different teams have different languages for how their offense or defense works, and while it can be used as a supplement, using the portal also has its downsides. And of course, Kiffin is far from the only coach to voice these types of concerns.
Ole Miss returns 45% of its offensive production and has to replace standout QB Jaxson Dart. Austin Simmons provides a strong place to start, but how will the inexperienced QB look in his first starting role?
