Bestselling Author, 44, Releases 11th Novel — Everybody Expected Me to Fail

Horror, noir, fantasy, gothic fiction— Silvia Moreno-Garcia has done it all, sometimes all in one novel.

It's been more than eleven years since the New York Times bestselling author released her debut novel, Signal to Noise, and as she gears up to release her 11th, her work is no easier to define now than it was in 2015. Her genre-bending, label-defying books continue to captivate modern readers, not in spite of her refusal to stick to genre conventions, but because of it.

There's been much anticipation from critics and readers alike for Moreno-Garcia's 11th novel, The Bewitching, but that wasn't always the case. Her first five novels— an impressive body of work in and of itself— received great reviews, but it wasn't until she released Mexican Gothic in 2020 that she found herself catapulted into the literary spotlight.

While other authors might have felt pressured to stick to a single genre, Moreno-Garcia used the lack of commercial success she experienced early in her career to her advantage.

"Everybody expected me to fail," she told The New York Times. "So I would just say, 'Well, I'm going to do this now.' And they’d be like, 'Sure.' Pat [my] head and be like, ‘It’s OK.'"

Low expectations afforded Moreno-Garcia a rare freedom. But, with the success of Mexican Gothic came higher expectations. For a brief moment, the book was on track to be adapted into a television series by Hulu.

Ultimately, the adaptation never came to fruition, and Moreno-Garcia wasn't disappointed— in fact, she was quite the opposite. "I was glad when nobody cared about me anymore."

With The Bewitching, Moreno-Garcia has leaned to her freedom to experiment, explore and be expansive in her work once again. According to The New York Times, the novel "cuts between three distinct time periods, as a New England graduate student in 1998 investigates a mysterious disappearance from the thirties and recalls her grandmother's stories of witchcraft in Mexico."

For Moreno-Garcia, playing in the world of horror is liberating, not restrictive.

"Horror is a way to explore certain topics that are not as interesting when they're explored in other ways," she told NPR in 2020. "And you see that with good horror when it explores things like race, things like violence, things like womanhood— that it's just this really great tapestry where you can weave a lot of pictures."

The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia will be released on July 15, 2025 by Penguin Random House.
