President Donald Trump says he is considering “taking away” the US citizenship of a longtime rival, actress and comedian Rosie O’Donnell.
“Because of the fact that Rosie O’Donnell is not in the best interests of our Great Country, I am giving serious consideration to taking away her Citizenship,” Trump wrote in a social media post on Saturday.
He added that O’Donnell, who moved to Ireland in January, should stay in Ireland “if they want her.”
US TV personality Rosie O’Donnell has been bitter enemies with Donald Trump for years. (Picture: Paul Agostini/AP)The two have criticized each other publicly for years, an often bitter back-and-forth that predates Trump’s involvement in politics.
In recent days, O’Donnell on social media denounced Trump and recent moves by his administration, including the signing of a massive tax and spending cuts plan.
In response to the president’s citizenship threat, O’Donnell mocked him as “King Joffrey with a tangerine spray tan”, referring to an evil character from the TV show Game of Thrones.
It’s just the latest threat by Trump to revoke the citizenship of people with whom he has publicly disagreed, most recently his former adviser and one-time ally, Elon Musk.
But O’Donnell’s situation is notably different from Musk, who was born in South Africa. O’Donnell was born in the United States and has a constitutional right to US citizenship.
The US State Department notes on its website that US citizens by birth or naturalisation may relinquish US nationality by taking certain steps, but only if the act is performed voluntarily.
In addition, the US Supreme Court ruled in a 1967 case that the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution prevents the government from taking away citizenship.
“The president has no authority to take away the citizenship of a native-born US citizen,” law professor Amanda Frost said on Saturday.
O’Donnell moved to Ireland after Trump defeated then-Vice President Kamala Harris at the 2024 election to win a second term in office.
She has said she’s in the process of obtaining Irish citizenship based on family lineage.
DONALD TRUMP VS ROSIE O’DONNELL: A HISTORY
2006: Speaking on the US TV show The View, where she was a co-host, O’Donnell called Trump a “snake oil salesman” following a controversy surrounding a contestant in the Miss USA beauty competition, which was owned by Trump. She also called into question his claims of self-made wealth. Trump angrily responded by calling O’Donnell a “real loser” and threatened to sue by saying, “I look forward to taking lots of money from my nice little fat Rosie.”
2011: After O’Donnell announced her engagement to partner Michelle Rounds, Trump wrote on X (then Twitter) that he felt sorry for Rounds’ parents “because they are devastated at the thought of their daughter being with a true loser.”
April 2014: O’Donnell underwent weight loss surgery, shedding 50 pounds. Trump mocked her as “not politically correct” for saying she felt “shame” while she was fat.
July 2014: The View announces that O’Donnell will return to the show as a co-host. Trump tweets that the move “tells you how desperate they must be. It is the standard short term fix and long term disaster.” An hour later he tweeted again: “Rosie is crude, rude, obnoxious and dumb – other than that I like her very much!”
February 2015: O’Donnell leaves The View for the second time. Trump is gleeful. “It’s very sad what’s happened to The View and I predicted that with Rosie O’Donnell it would fail. I guess the prediction is correct, but, I mean she’s a total trainwreck, so let’s see what happens and I hope it works out well. … let’s face it, Rosie is a loser.”
August 2015: Trump is now running for president. During a debate, moderator Megyn Kelly asks him about his use of language like “fat pigs,” “dogs,” “slobs” and “disgusting animals” to describe some women. Trump had a snappy reply. “Only Rosie O’Donnell.”
September 2016: In a debate against opponent Hillary Clinton, Trump said O’Donnell “deserved” what he had said about her and “nobody feels sorry for her.”
November 2016: Trump wins the election and the US presidency. “God help us all,” O’Donnell tweeted.
January 2025: O’Donnell announces on TikTok that she has left the US for Ireland following Trump’s second election win.
March 2025: Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin visits the White House for St Patrick’s Day. A reporter asks him about O’Donnell’s residency in Ireland. Trump asks Martin if he knows who O’Donnell is and tells him he is “better off” not knowing.
July 2025: Trump threatens to revoke O’Donnell’s US citizenship, despite having no authority to do so.
