Lebanese Army Announces Arrest of 109 Syrians

The Lebanese Army announced on Saturday, July 12,2025 that it had detained 109 Syrian nationals for lacking legal documentation

According to a statement carried by the state-run National News Agency (NNA), army units detained the individuals in al-Zahrani (Sidon and al-Aarid) and al-Qasr for being on Lebanese territory without proper papers.

    In a separate incident, the army also arrested a citizen, identified as T.Z., in the Burj al-Barajneh area on charges related to a previous shooting. All detainees are currently under investigation under the supervision of the relevant judiciary.

    A day earlier, on the evening of July 11, the Lebanese Army had already detained 56 Syrians across various locations for lacking legal residency.

    The NNA reported that army units, supported by Military Intelligence patrols, conducted raids in Syrian refugee camps in Anfeh, Bshamzin, and Amioun (Koura district), detaining 31 individuals.

    Another 18 Syrians were arrested by army personnel at the Madfoun checkpoint in Batroun, while Military Intelligence forces detained seven more in the Dora area of the Matn district.

    All arrests were attributed to the lack of valid identification or residency documents.

    Previous Operations

    On April 10, the army arrested a Lebanese citizen involved in smuggling weapons and ammunition from Syria, after a gunfight with Military Intelligence forces.

    In the Bekaa border town of Aaiha Marj al-Tout, an army unit and Military Intelligence arrested two Lebanese nationals and confiscated military-grade weapons, ammunition, and gear.

    On April 7, three Lebanese citizens were detained for smuggling Syrians into Lebanon.

    On March 27, the army apprehended 56 Syrians who had entered Lebanon illegally, in addition to seizing drugs, weapons, and military equipment

    A Lebanese Army guidance directorate statement at the time said an army unit in the Arsal highlands detained 56 Syrians for illegally entering Lebanon and seized four cars and three motorcycles.

    Another unit confiscated a quantity of narcotics, military ammunition, and equipment during security operations in the village of Housh al-Sayyid Ali in the Hermel region as part of efforts to curb infiltration and smuggling.
