An abortion advocate who was scheduled to speak Sunday in Greeley canceled her appearance because an increased level of threats, according to a representative of a local church.
Julie Burkhart, named as one of Time magazine’s most 100 influential people of 2025, was scheduled to speak Sunday morning at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greeley.
Church President and worship associate Kathy Vaughn said Burkhart canceled the appearance Friday afternoon because of increased threats.
“We didn’t get a message at the church, and I don’t believe Julie received a message saying ‘don’t come,’ ” Vaughn said Friday afternoon.
Burkhart was profiled in Time in April for her advocacy work in Wyoming three years ago when the state banned abortion. The magazine story said Burkhart and others opened the Wellspring Health Access clinic in response to the ban. The facility was Wyoming’s only full-service abortion clinic.
In February, Republican Gov. Mark Gordon signed legislation requiring abortion clinics to be licensed as ambulatory surgical centers. This action mandated the clinic doctors secure admitting privileges for patients at a hospital no more than 10 miles away. The bill also required the clinic to renovate its building.
The ban on abortion in Wyoming was overturned in courts. Currently, abortion is restricted in the state.
Burkhart has been involved with abortion clinics in Illinois, Kansas and Oklahoma, according to the Time story.
Vaughn said the church will have a service Sunday, despite Burkhart’s absence. The theme or topic of the service will be trust women and reproductive access. Security will be in place as planned.
“I think it’s horrible to do a death threat because you don’t agree with someone’s philosophy,” church member and former president Hollis Berendt said.
