San Diego Weekend Guide: July 11-13 – Bands & Baguettes
Ah, summer, when you can cop a squat at your favorite park – the beach too! – and catch a show. Here, a large crowd gathered at Kate Sessions Park for the 2024 Concerts on the Green series. (File photo courtesy of Pacific Beach Town Council)

Bonjour! Francophiles have a place to gather this San Diego weekend, as do fans of two long-running film franchises. And if you like your music in the great outdoors, we’re at the peak of the summer outdoor concert season.

Wave the red, white and bleu – yes, we mean the Tricolore, not the Stars and Stripes – in La Jolla Village to celebrate Bastille Day and La Jolla’s connections to French art, fashion, music and more. The event, part of La Jolla Art Walk, features free admission to the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (with online pre-registration), a fashion showcase by Fashion Week San Diego and French-inspired music and specialties from local businesses. Grab a map in La Jolla Village and start strolling at 4 p.m. Friday.

Can’t wait for July 24? Or didn’t get a badge and need another way to satisfy your Comic-Con jones?  The Comic-Con Museum hosts Summer Nights, when the venue stays open later, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, while offering food and drink specials for dedicated comics and pop culture fans.

One fellow well known to those fans, name of Clark, with a most impressive alter ego … yes, it’s time for another Superman re-boot. Head to AMC Court at the Mission Valley shopping center for a 5 p.m. premiere party Friday. Enjoy live music, pose with Superman and Supergirl, even try your hand at arm wrestling with the big fella. And oh yeah, the movie – it’s playing at the Mission Valley cineplex, plus two others nearby.

Listen! If you’re reading this and want to see Top Gun: Maverick with the San Diego Symphony performing the score – Lady Gaga contributed – stop reading this NOW and click through to snag your ticket. There’s few left – starting at $74 – for the 7:30 p.m. show at the Rady Shell and they won’t last long.

The second annual North Park Record Fair combines love for vinyl and vegan food at noon Saturday. The Chakasonica Fronterizx Vinyl Collective and Vegan Food Pop Up play host next to North Park Mini-Park at noon Saturday.

Arts District Liberty Station’s Summer Arts Fest begins at 4 p.m. Saturday, featuring blues artist, and San Diego Music Award winner, Whitney Shay. The show is the first of three free, family-friendly outdoor concerts on the North Promenade of the district, 2820 Roosevelt Road.

The Marine Band San Diego Summer Concert will focus on classics by American composers, including John Williams and George Gershwin. The show begins in Little Italy’s Piazza della Famiglia, 523 W Date St. at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Free summer concerts in parks or plazas, but how about the beach too? Twice a month in July and August, Encinitas’ Cultural Arts Division brings performers to Moonlight Beach. Bands play on a stage in front of the sea, with plenty of room for picnics and dancing. Up this week: Lolo Paniolo and Kehulili O Kailani Dancers, at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Concerts on the Green series at Kate Sessions Park begins at 4 p.m. Sunday with the Pacific Records Showcase featuring Sandollar, The Tourmaliners, Kela Sako, Shane Hall, Slack Key ‘Ohana and Kristina Bennett. Shows continue through Aug. 10.
