UN and Saudi Arabia Partner to Fight Malnutrition in Syria

The Saudi-based King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief) has reaffirmed its commitment to combating malnutrition in Syria through an ongoing partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The initiative focuses on providing life-saving nutritional support to children and women in Hama governorate.

In a post on its official X account on Wednesday, July 9, KSRelief announced that the program had reached more than 19,600 mothers and children through fixed clinics and mobile medical teams.

The center also reported training 12,000 caregivers in optimal infant and young child feeding practices—laying the groundwork for healthier futures among vulnerable families.

KSRelief had previously contributed $4.75 million to support the health sector in northwest Syria, in partnership with the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean. The funds benefited over 50 health facilities and thousands of patients, including 1,200 kidney dialysis patients who now receive monthly treatment. This effort has helped ensure continuity of care in the aftermath of the 2023 earthquake, according to a July 2 statement from the center.

Advanced Medical Center Planned for Damascus

As part of its broader healthcare initiatives, KSRelief signed a cooperation agreement with the International War and Disaster Victims Protection Association (Al-Ameen) to establish and equip an advanced medical center in Damascus, in coordination with the Syrian Ministry of Health.

According to a June 18 statement reviewed by Enab Baladi, the project aims to strengthen both primary and secondary healthcare services in the capital by building a comprehensive medical facility tailored to the needs of local communities. The initiative is part of long-term efforts to support sustainable recovery in Syria.

The new center will include specialized clinics, emergency departments, laboratories, and a dialysis unit, all equipped with modern medical technologies and operated by qualified staff. It is designed to improve access to safe and effective healthcare—especially for vulnerable populations.

During the signing ceremony, both parties emphasized the strategic importance of the project in bolstering Syria’s healthcare infrastructure and enhancing long-term humanitarian cooperation. They also stressed the need for ongoing coordination with official authorities to ensure the sustainability and quality of the services provided.

Meanwhile, since February 2025, KSRelief—working in collaboration with Al-Ameen—has been implementing its “Amal” (Hope) volunteer program across several hospitals in Damascus.
