Julian McMahon's cause of death has been officially confirmed.
According to a Cremation Approval Summary Report from the Pinellas County Medical Examiner's Office in Florida, obtained by PEOPLE, the Nip/Tuck star died of lung metastasis due to head and neck metastatic cancer. He was 56.
His passing was ruled as natural, and the Australian actor's remains have since been cremated.
McMahon's wife, Kelly Paniagua, announced the news of his death on Friday, July 4, revealing that her husband had privately been battling cancer.
"With an open heart, I wish to share with the world that my beloved husband, Julian McMahon, died peacefully this week after a valiant effort to overcome cancer," Paniagua, 47, said in her statement Friday. "Julian loved life. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved his work, and he loved his fans. His deepest wish was to bring joy into as many lives as possible."
She continued, "We ask for support during this time to allow our family to grieve in privacy. And we wish for all of those to whom Julian brought joy, to continue to find joy in life. We are grateful for the memories."
McMahon was best known for his roles in films like Fantastic Four, and his wildly popular turns on TV in shows like Nip/Tuck and and Charmed.
In the days following his passing, McMahon's former co-stars and friends paid tribute to the beloved actor, reflecting on both his talent and spirit.
Alyssa Milano, who starred opposite McMahon on Charmed, shared that she was "heartbroken" by the loss, writing on Instagram: "He was more than my TV husband. He was a dear friend."
Fellow co-star Holly Marie Combs also remembered McMahon, and his infectious energy, writing, "I will miss his unyielding zest for life," while Rose McGowan called the actor a "force of brilliance, wild talent and humor" in her tribute shared to her Instagram Stories.
The love extended beyond the Charmed family, with Nip/Tuck castmate Dylan Walsh offering a heartfelt message to his longtime friend, writing, "Dear Jules, I know you like to flout the boundaries, but this time you’ve gone too far." McMahon's Fantastic Four co-star, Ioan Gruffudd, also weighed in, calling it a "joy" and an "honor" to work alongside McMahon.
"This is terribly sad news about Julian. Even though we played each other's nemeses, there was always so much lightness and laughter working together. Every encounter with him was a joy," Gruffudd wrote. "It was an honor to be Dr. Richards to his Dr. Doom. My heart goes out to his wife and family. God speed Julian."
In addition to Paniagua, McMahon is survived by his 25-year-old daughter, Madison, whom he shared with ex-wife Brooke Burns. Burns, 47, also remembered McMahon shortly after his death, posting a touching photo of the actor with their daughter.
