Former EastEnders actor, director and writer Frank Barrie has died aged 88, it has been confirmed in a statement by his agent.
Scott Marshall Partners confirmed the sad news in a statement released today, which read: "It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved client, Frank Barrie, at the age of 88. He died peacefully at home, with his wife Mary and daughter Julia."
The official EastEnders X and Instagram accounts have paid tribute to Barrie, who appeared on the soap between 2010 and 2011 as Edward Bishop.
Sharing an image of Barrie from one of the episodes, they wrote: "We are deeply saddened to hear that Frank Barrie has passed away. Our love and thoughts are with Frank's family and friends."
View oEmbed on the source websiteBarrie appeared as Edward in a total of 23 episodes during his time on the soap, best known for being a friend of the late June Brown's Dot Branning, having worked as a choirmaster at Walford Church.
Aside from his stint in Walford, Barrie was best known for his work in the theatre, having made his acting debut back in 1959 in a York Theatre Royal production of Henry IV, Part 2.
He went on the join the Bristol Old Vic company, going on to become the leading man in many plays.
His illustrious stage career involved taking on the roles of Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, a role he reprised on Broadway and toured throughout the US and Europe at the time.
Sir Laurence Olivier himself invited Barrie to join the National Theatre in 1969, and after accepting the job offer, Barrie went on to star in various plays including Shylock, A Woman Killed with Kindness and The Way of the World.
More recently, Barrie starred in the 2020 stage production of Flashman at 80, in which he appeared as Harry Flashman to celebrate the character's fictional bicentennial.
In terms of television, Barrie appeared in over 150 TV shows in varying roles, having featured in Doctors, Howards' Way and Queen of Swords.
