Back in 2022, Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips declared reboot, Dexter: New Blood, would be the true end to the serial killer’s long and twisted story.
In the New Blood series finale, the serial killer and blood spatter analyst-turned-fishing equipment salesman (played by Michael C Hall) appeared to breathe his last as he was shot by his troubled teenage son, Harrison (Jack Alcott).
Shortly after, Phillips told Deadline: "There is no question that this is the finale of Dexter. Dexter is dead."
However, fast-forward three years and Dexter has risen like a phoenix from the ashes for Dexter: Resurrection, having miraculously survived the prior killshot.
But why did the continuation feel necessary for the team?
Speaking to RadioTimes.com, Phillips said: "It's not so much necessary as a welcome opportunity.
"I mean, no television is necessary, but to get the chance to continue a show after 20 years is virtually unheard of in what we do, and we're getting to live our dream."
"The main reason is Michael C Hall, there's no doubt," he added. "He is such a fan favourite.
"Why do people invite a serial killer into their homes every Sunday night? It's because of Michael Hall, and because of his voice-over.
"His voice-over makes him vulnerable and relatable and funny. Sometimes we feel his pain, sometimes we feel his irony. I don't think people can get enough of, I'm sure we can't get enough of, Michael."
Co-executive producer Scott Reynolds added: "We still have a lot of stories that we want to tell. Dexter's going through a whole new period of life, being a father of a young man. So there's a lot to do still."
It doesn’t take long, either, for Dexter to fall right back into trouble – particularly with the arrival of his old friend, Miami Metro detective Angel Batista (David Zayas), who has some reasonable questions about his long-presumed-dead pal.
But after leaving Florida for the quiet life in upstate New York, Dexter finds a whole new world of opportunity when he arrives in New York City in Resurrection.
Heading to the Big Apple to track down his son Harrison, he soon finds himself entangled with a group of serial killers – all of whom have their own methods and means for choosing their victims.
"New York is basically a surveillance state, and we have to pay attention to that," says Phillips.
"New York also has 8 million people, and in that 8 million people, there are some amazingly wonderful people he meets, and some amazingly terrible people upon whom he needs to mete out his own particular form of justice.
"Plus New York is vibrant and exciting and surprising."

"They're a gold mine of originality and of inspiration for storytelling and of challenges for Dexter," Phillips teased.
But just how he gets involved with them – and what they mean for his journey to reconnect with Harrison – is yet to be revealed.
With Dexter now firmly on Angel’s radar as well, only time will tell if the character lives to fight another day.
But Phillips and Reynolds both told us that they don’t see this story ending after the upcoming season, noting the show could "go on for years, plural".
"Dexter Resurrection will continue on," asserted Reynolds. "As will Dexter: Original Sin."
