Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano meet for the third time this weekend in the headline bout of an historic card at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The Taylor vs Serrano 3 show is the first ever all-female card to be hosted at the iconic venue as these two superstars complete a trilogy.

Taylor won the two previous meetings but both of those bouts were incredibly close.

Taylor won via split decision in their first clash back in 2022 at the Garden before the duo locked horns again in November, with the Bray Bomber claiming a unanimous decision win, although in truth that clash was even closer with Taylor winning by just a single point on all three judges’ scorecards.

Revenge for Serrano

Taylor may have won the last time these two fighters met around eight months ago, but the result was a contentious one.

Many observers, this writer included, felt Serrano should have been the one with her hand raised at the end of 10 entertaining rounds and the fact Taylor won unanimously – despite being docked a point for a headbutt – made that decision even more perplexing.

That isn’t to say Serrano won comfortably, but the Puerto Rican southpaw threw more punches, landed more punches and was more accurate with 44% of her shots connecting to Taylor’s 41%.

A similar level of performance from Serrano should be enough to win on Friday, particularly if that result is in the minds of the respective judges, who may then look a little more favourably on the work she does if they view her previous defeat as harsh.

In contrast, Taylor probably needs to raise her levels further if she is to make this rivalry a 3-0 whitewash and that looks a huge ask. The 39-year-old is one of the greatest women boxers of all time but her levels have started to drop a little, whereas Serrano still looks at the very top of her game.

The margins will be tight again, but Serrano has the extra motivation of avenging a defeat that she feels was unjust and that could be key in this high-quality match-up.

Serrano may need the judges

Serrano may feel she needs to force a stoppage to get a win over Taylor on her CV after being on the wrong end of two close decisions, but it is hard to see an early finish after both of the previous fights went the full distance.

Taylor has never been stopped and neither has Serrano, so the Real Deal seems more likely to finally claim that elusive success over the Irish star via a decision.

Serrano does have an impressive stoppage rate with 31 of her 47 wins coming inside the distance. However, the 36-year-old has only managed one early finish in her last nine fights and is stepping up in weight to face Taylor again.
