Diamondbacks’ Geraldo Perdomo hits grand slam vs. Padres

SAN DIEGO — The Arizona Diamondbacks squandered two chances with the bases loaded on Tuesday, and Geraldo Perdomo did not let it happen again with a grand slam on Wednesday at the San Diego Padres.

Perdomo roped a fastball from Padres starter Dylan Cease over the wall in right field to break the score open at 6-0 during the fifth inning. There were two outs in the frame, and Ketel Marte had just walked to load the bases for Perdomo.

The Diamondbacks have a league-leading nine grand slams this season, and Perdomo has hit 10 home runs for the first time in his career, doing so before the All-Star break, at that. He also reached 64 RBIs, which is top seven in the National League.

His previous career highs were six home runs and 47 RBIs, and this level of production before the All-Star breaks speaks volumes about his growth as a hitter.

Arizona’s franchise record for grand slams in a single season is 11 from 2024. The 2001 squad also hit nine grand slams.

Perdomo has two of them this year and three in his career.

The Padres shut out the Diamondbacks on Tuesday for a 1-0 win, robbing two home runs in addition to escaping two jams.

The D-backs jumped ahead on Wednesday when catcher James McCann crushed a solo shot 443 feet in the third inning off Cease, leaving no chance for more robberies. Eugenio Suarez hit a solo shot in the fourth inning, his 29th of the season as he approached 30 home runs for the second straight season.
