POINT LOMA – While it may seem that summer has just gotten underway, the prep football season is right around the corner — with a twist.
For the Pointers, the 2025 season brings a big change. After a 6-6 season and a 1-3 record in a brutal Western League that included county powers Lincoln and Cathedral Catholic, along with perennial nemesis Madison and a rebuilding St. Augustine team, the Pointers have been re-leagued.
Joining the Eastern League for this season, the Pointers will play league games against La Jolla, San Diego, Madison, Christian, and St. Augustine. Cathedral Catholic remains on the schedule as a non-league game on Oct. 10, sandwiched between league games.
Practice begins July 31, with scrimmages allowed starting Aug. 12, and Point Loma is set to open the season when they travel to Del Norte on Aug. 22.
Head coach Ryan Price returns for his second season and was pleased with what he observed during a series of passing league events that took place last month. Matched against other high schools and playing on local college campuses, the Pointers outscored numerous opponents.
Both of last season’s quarterbacks return.
For Henry Heuser (52% completion rate, 650 yards, six touchdowns, seven interceptions), it will be his senior season.
Ryder Watson (58% completion rate, 1,523 yards, nine touchdowns, 11 interceptions) will be a junior.
Defense should be a Pointer strength with several leading tacklers returning, led by senior Mateo Correia.
Playoffs will be determined at the end of the season based on computerized rankings on the MaxPreps website. Of 76 teams in Divisions I-V, 64 will make the playoffs, grouped in this manner:
Teams 1-4 will comprise the Open Division; 5-16 will become Division I; 17-28 will be Division II; 29-40 will be Division III; 41-52 will be Division IV, and 53-64 will be Division V.
