PACIFIC BEACH – Hanna Daly has done it again. The prolific painter recently finished yet another mural in Pacific Beach, adding to the vibrant art and beach culture of the community.
Daly worked with Kona Big Wave, a Hawaiian brewing company, to create a vision of waves and flowers on the side of Mission Surf, at 4320 Mission Blvd. The project took about seven days.
This isn’t Daly’s first time around the PB block. She has several murals lining businesses and walls around Pacific Beach.
This latest addition won’t be her last, either.
“PB is just a fun community. Everybody wants to stop and chit-chat with you,” she said. “That’s always my favorite thing.”
Most of Daly’s work takes a couple of days, but this massive mural kept her busy for a week. The combination of the mural’s size and the “heinous” parking situation led to a slightly longer process. Nevertheless, Daly powered through.
She said her collaboration with Kona Big Wave was easy because she loves to paint waves and flowers, and that’s exactly what was in this mural. She said she admired Kona Big Wave’s commitment to public art as a form of advertising.
“I think that they realize the power of public art, which is cool. It’s fun to see big companies that aren’t just doing branding, they’re creating this art,” she said.
Daly has been painting since 2004 and has more than 1,500 murals under her belt. Her love for murals grew out of her belief that it’s gratifying “creating art for everyone.”
Except for the parking difficulties, Daly enjoys her days in the beach community and has another mural pending at Ocean’s Ice Cream on the boardwalk.
After finishing a project in Little Italy, she will go back to painting in Pacific Beach, where no wall will be safe from her colorful brushstrokes.
