On July 9, 1995, Jerry Garcia played with the Grateful Dead for the final time at Soldier Field in Chicago.
At the time, the band consisted of Garcia on guitar and vocals, Bob Weir on guitar and vocals, Phil Lesh on bass, Bill Kreutzmann on drums, Mickey Hart on drums, and Vince Welnick on keyboards and vocals.
Although the Grateful Dead had been performing together for just over 30 years by that point, the July 8 and July 9, 1995, concerts are often remembered as somewhat disastrous shows.

“They ranged from painful to spectacular, often leaping immediately from one extreme to the other. Jerry, in particular, seemed distracted much of the time," Relix magazine wrote in a 2010 retrospective.
"Aside from the moments when he was in the Zone and losing himself in the music, Jerry looked like he really just wanted to go home and forget all this," the piece continued. "And, quite honestly, who can blame him one bit for that? Fortunately, there was plenty in both shows to make up for Jerry’s bad moments."
The band’s set list during Garcia’s last performance:
"Touch of Grey""Little Red Rooster""Lazy River Road""When I Paint My Masterpiece""Childhood's End""Cumberland Blues""Promised Land""Shakedown Street""Samson and Delilah""So Many Roads""Samba in the Rain""Corrina""Drums / Space""Unbroken Chain""Sugar Magnolia""Black Muddy River" (Encore) "Box of Rain"Just weeks later, Garcia died on August 9, 1995, from a heart attack at a drug treatment facility in California. He had long been suffering from diabetes, heart problems, and the effects of decades of substance abuse.
Despite the monumental loss of Garcia, the Grateful Dead continued to evolve, with surviving members forming various offshoots like The Other Ones and later Dead & Company.
