English spinner Adil Rashid states that current Indian skipper Shubman Gill has emerged as an on-par performer to former Indian skipper Virat Kohli. He claimed that Gill has had similar success in Test cricket to that of Virat Kohli.
While stating this, the England spinner meant that when Kohli was 25 years old, his tally of hundreds had been almost matched by the now 25-year-old Indian skipper Gill. Shubman Gill played a great role in India's monumental 336-run win at Edgbaston.
While appearing in a podcast named 'Beard Before Wicket', Rashid stated that Shubman Gill already matches the calibre of Virat Kohli in his short career in terms of Test hundreds.
"He's got the potential already. I've seen a stat; he's 25 but he's on par with Kohli already, when he was 25, in terms of centuries. Growing up in India, he's got to be used to that pressure in the IPL and playing in India," said Adil Rashid.
On the other hand, England batter Dawid Malan has also reckoned that Shubman Gill leading Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League has been a huge perk in his career, setting him up for a captaincy role so early in his career.
As a skipper in the IPL, Gill is often subjected to immense pressure in the league matches, and despite all, he has emerged as a successful captain, leading his side to the playoffs and scoring a flurry of runs himself.
Gill has truly been an inspiration, taking up the captaincy role smoothly and scoring runs more effectively than before, with two centuries and a double century in England already.
"To captain an IPL team. He's taken over and to be able to captain, to deal with pressure of franchise cricket, with owners who have opinions on teams, your own performances. They spend a lot of money on the team and want the team to be performing. That will help him captaining India," said Malan.
"Someone like Shubman Gill, having that experience and to deal with pressure, expectations, and big names, that would put him in a really good space to captain India," he added.
Former Indian pacer lauds Shubman Gill as a gutsy skipper
Speaking in a video shared on his YouTube channel, former Indian pacer Irfan Pathan commended Gill for his tactical brilliance to go with Washington Sundar in the playing 11 instead of several suggestions that indicated the inclusion of Kuldeep Yadav at Edgbaston.
The strategy proved to go in India's favour as Gill himself, with Washington Sundar, built a huge 100+ partnership for the 7th wicket in the first innings of the Edgbaston Test.
He also praised Gill's sudden variability in Akash Deep's ends, which reflected on Shubman Gill's ability to be thoughtful and productive under different situations.
"Akash Deep had taken a wicket from the Pavilion End. Naturally, most people assumed he’d continue from that end the next day. But Gill told him to bowl from the other end, saying there might be a crack there that could offer more help. Akash Deep bowled from that end — and got a wicket." Pathan reflected on Gill's on-field tactics.
Teams eye advantage at Lord's
Indian players in this series are in the best of form, and it can easily be said that the likes of batters Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, and bowlers Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah would all be looking to give their best at Lord's.
The Lord's Test is crucial not only because it will be played at the iconic venue but also because the winner of this Test will have an early advantage in the series.
