Slow Horses author praises “tremendous Down Cemetery Road adaptation with Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson

Slow Horses fans are getting a double dose of Mick Herron soon, as another of the crime novelist's books is being adapted for Apple TV+.

The new series, Down Cemetery Road, stars Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson, and was first announced in April 2024.

Now, Herron has opened up on the new adaptation, teasing that it is looking "absolutely tremendous".

Herron was speaking exclusively with Radio Times alongside the showrunner of Slow Horses, Will Smith, ahead of the duo's appearance together at the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, which is running from 17th to 20th July.

Of Down Cemetery Road, Herron said: "It stars Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson. Morwenna Banks has written the series, and she's done a wonderful job. There's quite a lot of overlap in the teams that made Slow Horses and Down Cemetery Road, and what I've seen of it, which is only little bit, is looking absolutely tremendous."

As well as Thompson and Wilson, the series also stars Adeel Akhtar, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Tom Goodman-Hill, Darren Boyd, Tom Riley, Adam Godley, Sinead Matthews, Ken Nwosu, Fehinti Balogun and Aiysha Hart.

Slow Horses writer says that season 5's British politics plot is "sadly topical"Slow Horses writer explains biggest challenge with upcoming season 5

The official synopsis says: "When a house explodes in a quiet Oxford suburb and a girl disappears in the aftermath, neighbour Sarah Tucker becomes obsessed with finding her and enlists the help of private investigator Zoë Boehm.

"Zoë and Sarah suddenly find themselves in a complex conspiracy that reveals that people long believed dead are still among the living, while the living are fast joining the dead."

Akhtar previously teased that the show's tone and sensibilities go hand in hand with Slow Horses, saying: "We do this really amazing thing when it comes to British dramas, and Slow Horses definitely has that, where there's no real heroes, everybody's a bit lumpy and bumpy and a bit imperfect. And Down Cemetery definitely carries that aesthetic on."

"The reason why I love Slow Horses so much is that as soon as you take a character super seriously, they just pull the rug with something really funny and comedic. And this latest one that I'm doing has got a similar sort of thing going on as well."
