BBC cricket journalist Joe Wilson was called out by Shubman Gill for reminding India of their poor Test record at Edgbaston ahead of the second Test. Wilson has now admitted that he won’t make that mistake again, adding that his words may have motivated the visiting team to defeat the Ben Stokes-led side.
Shubman Gill created history with a record-breaking performance in the Edgbaston Test. He scored 269 and 161 in the two innings - the most runs by an Indian captain in a single Test match. Gill helped the team secure an emphatic 336-run victory - their first-ever Test win at the venue in Birmingham.
Before the second Test between India and England at Edgbaston, British journalist Joe Wilson questioned Shubman Gill about India’s winless record at the venue. However, after leading India to their first-ever Test win at Edgbaston, Gill decided to have a cheeky dig at the journalist.
Gill, who had remembered the pre-match comment about India's past failures at the venue, seemed eager to respond after his match-winning performance.
"I can't see my favourite journalist. Where is he? I wanted to see him," Gill said at the post-match press conference when asked by an Indian journalist about his reaction to the same question now.
I Won’t Say Anything That Motivates Shubman Gill - Joe Wilson
A few days after India’s victory, Joe Wilson shared his thoughts on Shubman Gill’s post-match response. Speaking to RevSportz, Wilson admitted that his question about India’s poor record at the venue may have served as extra motivation for Gill and the team to deliver a commanding performance.
When asked whether he would change his line of questioning ahead of the third Test at Lord’s, Wilson said that he plans to be more cautious. He added that the Indian captain responds to every question with grace and intelligence.
"I won't say anything that motivates him," Wilson said when asked if he would change his question before the third Test at Lord's. "I think he's a real gentleman. He answers every question with dignity and intelligence. He's leading his team pretty well in all departments, especially in the media."
What the Captain Said Was Very Sensible - Joe Wilson
Joe Wilson also stated that stats can sometimes be misleading, as they refer to different times and generations. Wilson said that India were rarely expected to win overseas in the 1970s and 1980s, which is very different from the present scenario.
"What the captain said was very sensible. If you look back at the 1970s and even the 1980s, there was a very different feel about the Indian Test team here. When they would come aboard and would never really have the expectation to win," Wilson stated.
"Now they do have that. Maybe that was the statistics playing around with his or maybe that was a motivation because we've almost lost count of the records that Shubman himself broke. How to get Shubman out is now the number one question for the England coaches," he added.
