Danni Minogue opened up about her late ex-husband Julian McMahon just one month before his unexpected death.
Minogue, 53, married McMahon in 1994 and the pair parted ways 18 months later. In an interview with “How to Fail” podcast host Elizabeth Dey published in June, Minogue opened up about what the pair’s previous relationship was really like.
The singer and actress insisted that she didn’t see the marriage as a “failure,” but admitted that when it ended “my world was very dark and bleak.”
“I just couldn’t get over how wrong I’d got this,” she explained at the time. “That I had… that I was a bad judge of character.”

She added that she was only 23 at the time, and “obviously lived a big, full life, and I’d met a lot of people, and I thought I’m pretty good at judging people, but love sweeps you off your feet, and it’s an incredible feeling.”
“And I really got swept away, and did not see what it actually was,” Minogue said. “It should have just been something that was fun.”
McMahon’s wife Kelly McMahon confirmed his death from cancer on Friday, July 4. He was 56. “With an open heart, I wish to share with the world that my beloved husband, Julian McMahon, died peacefully this week after a valiant effort to overcome cancer,” Kelly told Deadline in a statement.
“Julian loved life. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved his work, and he loved his fans. His deepest wish was to bring joy into as many lives as possible,” she continued. “We ask for support during this time to allow our family to grieve in privacy. And we wish for all of those to whom Julian brought joy, to continue to find joy in life. We are grateful for the memories.”
For Minogue, it was her own parents’ “long, full, happy marriage” that served as a guideline for what she said she had hoped to have with McMahon.
“He was, you know, hunky and charming and always a big energy walking into a room and made me feel fantastic until it didn’t,” Minogue said. “And I hadn’t realized this, but he was also someone who was incredibly well connected with sort of Australian elite, politically.” (McMahon is the son of former Australian Prime Minister William McMahon.)
“I knew him as an actor on Home and Away. So I didn’t meet him in that world,” Minogue explained. “I wasn’t exposed to that world. I’m still not. It’s not my place. I’ve had no intention of hanging out in that world.”
Unfortunately, her ex-husband’s mother didn’t seem to believe her.
“You know, his mother was very wary of me and she thought that I was wanting to be part of that world, whatever it was that I was going to take, take, take from them,” Minogue continued. “And it was the furthest thing from the truth and not what I wanted at all. So she made it very clear that I was not to be around and she didn’t want me a part of anything.”

Eventually McMahon went to work in New York while Mingoue was in London.
“He got on a soap opera there and I committed to traveling back and forth,” she said. “And each time I came back, there was just something not right. Things I saw in the apartment, how I felt. There were all people around that I didn’t know and he was very, very distant and to the point that he pulled it off. But in the meantime we’d run through all my money and I still don’t know if that’s sort of what made him just say ‘All right I’m out of here, I’m on something else.’ I honestly don’t know. He has never explained it to me.”
