Community input sought on new Ukiah park near Norgard Lane

The city of Ukiah will be collecting public input Tuesday regarding a new park proposed near Norgard Lane during the next meeting of its Public Spaces Commission.

According to the staff report prepared for the July 8 meeting, the commission will first meet at the east end of Norgard Lane for a site visit at 5:30 p.m., then “the group will reconvene at 6 p.m. at the Alex Rorabaugh Center Community Meeting Room for a park planning session.”

City staff are seeking public comment on “desired features and plans” for the new park, plans for which came about after “the city of Ukiah’s 2025 Park Gap Analysis identified the area on the south side of the city as underserved by parks, (and that) one location noted in the report is an approximately three-acre, city-owned area on the east end of Norgard Lane, (described as) flat and including opportunities for river access, home to mature Oak trees, and includes an old barn.”

Also, city staff note, the site “holds the potential for the development of a trail along the Russian River,” and although the location is outside the current city limits, “the city is willing to start the park planning process regardless of the outcome of discussed annexations.”

Staff also quote City Council Member Juan Orozco as pointing out the need for a park on the south side of town, noting that “This part of the Ukiah Valley is significantly underserved in terms of parks and open space. Now that the city of Ukiah owns this parcel with riverfront access, we have a unique opportunity to step up and fill this need.”

After the July 8 meeting, there is a community picnic scheduled at the proposed site on Saturday, July 12, from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.  An online survey is available for those who cannot attend the planning meetings (English Survey – Spanish Survey).

Tuesday’s meeting is being held both in person at the Alex Rorabaugh Community Center, 1640 S. State St., beginning at 6 p.m., and online at: us06web.zoom.us/j/81764322746
