“Syria Indicator” Launches Its Second Investigative Journalism Training

On Sunday, July 5, the independent media platform Syria Indicator launched its second training session in investigative journalism, as part of the “Ethical Journalism for Peacebuilding in Syria” project, supported by Free Press Unlimited (FPU) and the European Union, and led by journalist Ali Eid.

The training focuses on professional and ethical journalism standards, the role of investigative reporting in strengthening civil society, defending marginalized communities, and promoting integrity.

It also includes practical steps in producing investigative pieces—such as sourcing, developing hypotheses, writing, verification, and fact-checking.

The training—part of a three-phase program held at separate intervals—is expected to conclude with the discussion of hypotheses and the selection of topics for producing investigative reports or in-depth features through collaborative work. For each topic, a team of three journalists will be assigned, and the final pieces will be published on the Syria Indicator website, accompanied by three months of editorial follow-up during the production phase.

The program targets freelance and staff journalists working inside Syria, with previous experience in journalism.

The five-day training is taking place in the training hall of Enab Baladi’s office in Damascus.

The aim of the platform is to build the capacity of participating journalists and empower them to produce impactful investigative stories and in-depth reports.

Syria Indicator conducted its first training in May (11–15), bringing together nine journalists from across Syria, who have since received ongoing editorial coaching to produce investigative pieces.

On June 15, Syria Indicator announced the opening of registration for two upcoming training sessions in investigative journalism in Damascus, with the second course scheduled to begin on July 20.

According to its official description, Syria Indicator is an independent platform dedicated to investigative journalism in Syria. Its name reflects its commitment to evidence-based reporting and addressing the lack of accountability and transparency in its region of focus. The platform seeks to produce impactful stories that promote justice, accountability, and civic engagement.
