Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas was selected as a reserve for the WNBA All-Star Game, the team announced Sunday.
When the All-Star starters were announced on Monday, many were surprised to see Thomas left out of the starting lineup despite her stats.
“I think she definitely should have been an All-Star starter. I think there are a couple people who are All-Stars but not All-Star starters,” said Mercury teammate Satou Sabally, who was selected as a starter on Monday.

Thomas has averaged 14.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and a career-high 9.4 assists per game prior to Sunday.
Though Thomas has missed five games due to a calf injury, she has played a key role for the Mercury this year. Thomas has helped the team the third-best record in the league (12-6) behind the Minnesota Lynx and New York Liberty.
Thomas has made the All-Star game five times previously as a reserve with the Connecticut Sun. In her 12th WNBA season, Thomas has not disappointed for the Mercury.
Reserves were selected by WNBA head coaches, though they weren’t allowed to nominate their own players. Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve and Liberty coach Sandy Brondello will be the coaches for the All-Star game.
The teams will be selected by captains Caitlin Clark from the Indiana Fever and Napheesa Collier from the Lynx on Tuesday. The All-Star game will be played in Indianapolis on July 19.
