All eyes are on Jayden Daniels as he enters Year 2 after a rookie season to remember in the NFL.
Daniels led his Washington Commanders team on an unlikely run that took them all the way to the NFC Championship game where they were beaten by the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.
Daniels racked up more than 3,500 regular season passing yards and 25 touchdowns, to go with 891 yards on the ground and six more TDs.
He totalled another 957 yards and six touchdowns in the playoffs to have Washington believing the former LSU man can end their wait for a world championship which stretches back to 1992.
However, as the team prepares for a year of increased expectation on the franchise, one former Super Bowl-winning MVP believes caution might be needed.
And that Washington don’t have to look too far into their history for an example, with Robert Griffin III’s rookie season followed by a drop off – largely down to serious knee injuries.
“Do you fear Jayden Daniels could be a potential one-hit wonder?” Cam Newton told Commanders fan Wale on the latest episode of his podcast.
“Seeing a lot of success as a rookie season, Ima say it in this way.
“There is nobody who had the game in a chokehold like Robert Griffin III, but RG3, I have to tip my cap to him.
“I see that same thing happening for Jayden.”
Daniels started all 17 games as Washington produced their first winning season since 2016 to finish 12-5 to enter the postseason as a wild card.
Road wins in Tampa Bay and Detroit meant they made their first NFC title since since their Super Bowl winning season in 1991
Daniels starred in his first year after being taken with the second overall pick in 2024GettyNewton’s guest was quick to respond, citing just how professional Daniels – whose career is guided by his mother – has been during his run with LSU and his debut season.
“Jayden loves the game too much,” he said.
“You’ve got people that don’t love the game, they love what comes with the game. That boy loves the game.
“I think you always fear, I mean we have got PTSD of not winning for so long so we don’t even know how to have good things.
“Like ‘Damn, okay, when is the honeymoon over! It’s easy to think like that, but I gotta believe in the new organization, we’re going in the right direction.”
The last couple of seasons have been a rollercoaster ride for rookie QBs, with five of the six first rounders selected in 2024 making themselves the starting signal caller.
Daniels was by far the stand-out having been taken with the second overall pick, while Drake Maye started 12 games for New England after being picked third overall and Bo Nix started all 17 games for the Denver Broncos.
Caleb Williams was the first overall pick for the Chicago Bears and showed flashes of what he is capable of behind a shaky offensive line and by the end of the season Michael Penix was locked in as the Atlanta Falcons starter, at the expense of $100m Kirk Cousins.
The only member of the group not to play was J.J. MCarthy, the former Michigan quarterback suffered a knee injury in training camp but he will lead the Minnesota Vikings into the 2025 season.
From the 2023 class, Bryce Young, CJ Stroud and Anthony Richardson all began their rookie seasons as the starters,
Young endured a nightmare first season for a disappointing Carolina Panthers team but his second year saw him bounce back under Dave Canales.
On the opposite side of the scale, Stroud – like Daniels – earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honours for the Houston Texans but suffered an up and down 2024 season.
Richardson’s two years in the league had yielded just 15 starts as injuries have limited his impact.
Daniels will hope for a second season that builds on his spectacular first and become one of the more consistent starters in the league
Washington are back in training camp in July, and begin their three-week preseason schedule against Maye and the Patriots before their Week 1 showdown with the New York Giants
