If rain washes out Day 5 of the second Test at Edgbaston, England will maintain their 1-0 lead in the five-match series. India would miss an opportunity to level the series, with the focus then shifting to the third Test. They would need to win the remaining matches to clinch the series.
With Edgbaston offering assistance to the new ball and England having spent considerable time in the field, India delayed their declaration. The massive target set also gave them a comfortable cushion to attack with the ball.

With the ball, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep delivered crucial early blows in England’s second innings, reducing the hosts to 72/3 by stumps on Day 4. India are in control heading into the final day.
Earlier, Gill had scored a double century in the first innings, helping India reach 587. England, in response, were dismissed for 407, handing the visitors a solid lead.
No team has chased more than 418 runs in a Test - the record set by Australia against the West Indies in 2003. England’s highest successful chase came at this very venue in 2022, when they chased down 378 against India.
