LSU receivers, Garrett Nussmeier pay tribute to Kyren Lacy during team media day

LSU kept Kyren Lacy close during its team media day this week.

During the team photoshoot portion of the day, LSU wide receivers posed for pictures alongside artwork honoring Lacy, the former Tiger wideout who passed away in April. In one photo, shared on social media Saturday by SI’s Zack Nagy, quarterback Garrett Nussmeier appeared alongside Zavion Thomas, Aaron Anderson, Chris Hilton, Kyle Parker, and tight end Trey’Dez Green.

Anderson also posted separately for photos with a portrait of Lacy. Thomas also had his own Lacy tribute for his individual photo.

Lacy played in 12 games for LSU last season and was second on the team in both receptions (58) and receiving yards (866).

He declared for the NFL Draft last December, but a fatal car accident involving Lacy threatened that dream. Lacy was charged with negligent homicide and a felony hit-and-run in connection with the crash. He was said to be speeding and passing in a no-passing zone when another motorist who swerved to avoid Lacy’s vehicle crashed head-on into another vehicle. One man died after being transported to a hospital. Authorities said Lacy fled the scene of the accident.

He turned himself in to police in January and was released shortly after on bond. Lacy’s defense attorney claimed Lacy did not cause the fatal crash.

In April, days before he was due in court for a grand jury hearing related to the December crash, Lacy passed away in what authorities ruled a suicide. Reports stated that Lacy was being pursued by police in Houston when his vehicle crashed. Emergency responders pronounced the 24-year-old dead at the scene.

“We’re saddened to learn of the tragic passing of former LSU Football student-athlete Kyren Lacy,” LSU said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones, as well as his former teammates and coaches impacted by his passing.”

In the months since Lacy’s passing, LSU has done several things to remember him.

A Celebration of Life service was held for Lacy in Thibodaux, Louisiana, several weeks after Lacy’s passing. LSU head coach Brian Kelly spoke during the service. Around the same time, former LSU tackle Will Campbell also wore a “2” pin on the lapel of his jacket at the NFL Draft to honor Lacy’s memory.

“Not only a great football player, he was such a good teammate, a good son, a good older brother, and just a good dude in general,” Campbell said at a draft press conference. “I’m sending many prayers to his family because he was going to get his name called this weekend.”
