Karla Mosley took to the main stage at the Essence Festival of Culture presentation. During the panel, the fan-favorite actress, who plays Dani Dupree, spoke about how the series is breaking boundaries with its approach on inclusivity.
One of the first questions that host Crystal Renee Hayslett asked was how the newest soap opera is pushing boundaries of what Daytime Drama can be in terms of inclusivity. Mosley replied eloquently sharing, “We’re pushing boundaries, first of all just in the look [of the show]. You know, we’ve never seen a show that looks like our show. From the wardrobe to the hair, all the different textures that are represented on the show.” Beyond the Gates has a predominantly black hair and makeup team, a first for a Daytime Drama.
The actress then continued to explain how the latest CBS soap opera is challenging expectation with their storytelling. Mosley said, “Then the stories, because they’re our stories, they reflect our people, they cannot help but push boundaries because they’re ones that we’ve not seen before.”
Mosley explained how the art of soap opera allows for a unique connection to their viewers due to the daily nature of the genre. “Because it’s in homes every single day, it’s allowing the world to see the beauty and richness of what we already know to be true. But also the messiness. You know, we’re allowed to be messy.” The actress excitedly continued, “We’re allowed to do all of that too, but still come back to a core family and be supported. Because that’s what we know to be true in our communities.”
Also on the panel was executive producer, Sheila Ducksworth, who added her perspective. “We wanted to show a little bit of everything. So you see the affluents, you see the successfulness, but you also do see the scandal, the sexiness. I mean, the intrigue, all of that, and that was really everything by design. We wanted to incorporate the best of everything, that people love about soap, but put our own spin on it. So, that this is a brand new day, and a brand new era and I have to say that it’s incredible how people have really come for it and love it and we are just excited that you guys are excited.”

CBS officially describes Beyond the Gates as a soap opera that is “set in a leafy Maryland suburb just outside of Washington, D.C., in one the most affluent African American counties in the United States; a posh gated community with winding tree-lined streets and luxurious mansions to call home. At the center of this community are the Duprees, a powerful and prestigious multi-generational family that is the very definition of Black royalty. But behind these pristine walls and lush, manicured gardens are juicy secrets and scandals waiting to be uncovered. And those who live outside these gates are watching closely. These are the places where our characters live, love, work and play. Those who have “made it” and those who haven’t are all trying to navigate life … and some with more grace than others.“
Beyond The Gates is developed and produced by CBS Studios and the NAACP in partnership with P&G Studios a division of Procter and Gamble. The series is the groundbreaking first hour-long black soap opera to premiere in daytime. The creation is the brainchild of award-winning showrunner Michele Val Jean, in association with executive producer Sheila Ducksworth, and is the first new soap opera to premiere since NBC debuted Passions back in 1999.
Beyond The Gates airs weekdays at 2 p.m. EST on CBS and streamed daily on Paramount Plus.
Beyond the Gates can be streamed from the beginning on Paramount Plus.
