Emma Raducanu knocked out of Wimbledon as Aryna Sabalenka emulates Serena Williams

Emma Raducanu has been knocked out of Wimbledon as she was beaten in straight sets by Aryna Sabalenka.

The British No.1 fought hard against the World No.1, but in the end, she fell to a 7-6, 6-4 defeat on Centre Court.

It means Raducanu heads home in the third round of the Grand Slam, while Sabalenka has emulated an icon.

The Belarusian is the first player to reach to fourth round for 11+ consecutive Women’s Grand Slam appearances since Serena Williams.

On top of that, she is also now the first player to make the last 16 in all their first three Women’s Grand Slam appearances as World No. 1 since Ashleigh Barty.

Raducanu was defeated after a blockbuster opening set that lasted well over an hour, with the pair battling to an incredible tie-break.

It came after Raducanu saved seven set points before then missing the chance herself to win the first of the match.

That left Sabalenka to come out on top, with a crucial tie-break win.

Since 2000, only Elena Rybakina (16) has won more tie breaks in WTA-level events than her this season (15) in an entire calendar year.

The pair then fought into a second set and Raducanu appeared to have claimed all of the momentum.

She moved 4-1 ahead and had the home crowd behind her at Wimbledon, but things changed rapidly.

Sabalenka would win the next five games in a row, turning on her dominant form that makes her one of the world’s best.

The Belarusian had three match points and claimed victory on the second on Centre Court.

Raducanu being knocked out at SW19 in the third round continues her unwanted streak of never making it past the fourth round at her home Grand Slam.

It was still an impressive evening for the 22-year-old though, with Sabalenka praising her opponent in her on-court interview.

She said: “She [Raducanu] played such incredible tennis and it was so incredibly hard to get this win. I fought for every point like crazy.

“Super happy with the win, happy to see her healthy and back on track and I’m pretty sure that she’s going to be back in top 10.”

Sabalenka continued, saying to the crowd: “Wow, what an atmosphere.

“My ears are still hurting, honestly, it was super loud. I was pretending…every time you were cheering her, I was just trying to pretend they were cheering for you!”

She then added: “I had a lot of experience in the past where I completely lost myself, but today I kept telling myself not to do the same mistake.

“I was trying to stay calm and push myself to the limits.

“Emma was playing incredible tennis, she was making me move a lot, she was serving well and from the baseline she was playing great tennis.

“I tried to stay focused and try to put all of the pressure on her.”

Sabalenka will now face Belgian Elise Mertens in the last 16 on Sunday, following Mertens’ win over Elina Svitolina.
