Indian veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja broke the latest standards set by the BCCI on Day 3 of the second test at Edgbaston. He moved way too early to the ground before the onset of the day's play, as he arrived individually without taking the team bus.
After their major failure in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India missed their first WTC final appearance. The BCCI set standard operating procedures (SoPs) that don't give any player authority to move to or from the ground on their own, as the rule suggests they will move together on the team bus.
Ravindra Jadeja declined the SoPs to come in early to face a few extra balls in the nets before he could resume his innings before the onset of day 2's play.
"Somewhere I felt that I should go and bat extra because the ball was still new," Jadeja said.
"I felt if I can see the new ball off, it would become easy for the rest of the innings. Luckily, I could bat till lunch, and then Washi[ngton Sundar] also batted well with Shubman."
"The more you bat in England, the better it is because you never feel you are set in England. At any time, a ball can swing and take your edge or bowl you," said Jadeja in the post-innings session.
Ravindra Jadeja went on to feature at Edgbaston, as Jadeja played till lunch to avoid another collapse for the Indian batting side.
The veteran all-rounder is well aware of how India collapsed twice in both innings of the Leeds test. Despite a good start, India faced the much-condemned loss at Leeds due to their two batting collapses.
This time, India was already struggling with half of the team back in the pavilion, as the visitors were reduced to 211-5 at Birmingham.
He decided to step in, as Ravindra Jadeja, who already had a partnership of 99 runs with skipper Shubman Gill, wanted to face the extra deliveries to avoid India from getting dismissed for a below-par score.
"When you contribute with the bat for the team, it feels great, when you are playing outside India, and the team needs you more, it feels good," Jadeja said.
Jadeja and Shubman Gill added 203 runs for the 6th wicket
Ravindra Jadeja built on a huge partnership alongside skipper Shubman Gill, who is relishing his new role as a No. 4 batter in the Indian test side.
Jadeja put on a staggering partnership alongside the captain, as they contributed 99 runs on Day 1 and ended their partnership after scoring 203 runs between them.
"From 210 for 5 to put together a big partnership to take the team forward, it is a challenge. I took it as a challenge. If you can stick around with the captain and put together a big partnership, it gives you confidence as a cricketer and a batter that in the coming matches also you can contribute," Ravindra Jadeja said on his Birmingham innings.
Ravindra Jadeja scored a crucial half-century as he was finally dismissed for 89 runs off a snorter from Josh Tongue, as he missed out on a well-deserved century.
Indian pacers strike early into the English batting innings
The Edgbaston pitch never seemed a bowling track, as the pitch seemed a paradise for batters. Despite a flat pitch, India struggled early with their middle-order and top-order batters being dismissed early.
However, Shubman Gill did not let this opportunity slip from his hands; he put on a record 6th wicket partnership with Jadeja and later went on to contribute to another 100+ run partnership with Washington Sundar. Shubman ended a top knock of 269, as he made a flurry of records at Birmingham.
The England innings began with the wickets of Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope, who were dismissed off consecutive deliveries by Indian pacer Akash Deep, who replaced Jasprit Bumrah in the Indian Playing 11. England were 3 wickets down for 25, as Joe Root and Harry Brook ended the day with a 50-run partnership.
