Michael Madsen, the iconic actor known for Kill Bill and Reservoir Dogs, was allegedly given a clean bill of health by doctors before dying on Thursday, July 3 at the age of 67.
Madsen was found unresponsive at his Malibu home and pronounced dead at 8:25 a.m., a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. His manager said the cause of death was cardiac arrest.
According to TMZ, Madsen's longtime friend and assistant, Dougie Smith, said Madsen's health had been cleared by doctors just days before his sudden death.
Smith told TMZ the actor was doing a routine hospital visit at UCLA last Friday to get his rotator cuff looked at, citing complications from a fall off a horse about two years ago. Madsen was apparently considering getting surgery, but due to his upcoming schedule, he decided to put it in a brace for the time being.

Along with the rotator cuff injury, Madsen also suffered a minor brain bleed from the fall. He reportedly received a PET scan to ensure everything was looking okay, and according to Smith, Madsen was cleared by his medical team.
Smith also noted that he last spoke to the actor Tuesday night, describing him as sounding "great" and that Madsen was looking forward to Nashville Comic-Con in the coming days.
Madsen was also preparing to release a new book called Tears For My Father: Outlaw Thoughts and Poems before he died. The book is scheduled to be released on May 26, 2026 and includes a foreword from famed Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino.
Madsen is survived by his wife, Deanna, and six children. A seventh child, Hudson, died in 2022.
