The Kuwaiti airline “Al Jazeera Airways” announced the resumption of its flights to Syria starting today, Wednesday, July 2, after a 13-year suspension.
The company clarified in a statement, a copy of which Enab Baladi obtained, that Al Jazeera Airways landed this morning at Damascus International Airport on its first flight to reestablish the direct air link between Kuwait and Syria after 13 years of interruption. The flight departed from Al Jazeera Terminal T5 at Kuwait International Airport with a full passenger load, including many returning to their homeland after a long absence — a step that reflects more than just an ordinary flight.
The statement indicated that flights will operate at a rate of one flight per day, with plans to increase to two flights daily before the end of the summer season. Expansion to serve other destinations within Syria is also being studied for the future.
The CEO of Al Jazeera Airways, Barathan Pasupathi, said that today marks the rebuilding of a vital bridge for transporting individuals, especially members of the Syrian community in Kuwait and beyond. Many passengers on today’s inaugural flight were returning to Syria for the first time in years.
The Syrian community in Kuwait is considered the second largest Arab community in the country, exceeding 200,000 individuals, according to the statement.
Al Jazeera Airways previously operated direct flights to Damascus, Aleppo, and Deir ez-Zor. The resumption of flights to Damascus represents a new start for reconnecting with Syria and responding to the increasing demand from the community members.
Since the fall of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024, the aviation sector has witnessed the return of major airlines to and from Syria, operating flights that had been suspended for more than 14 years.
The first flight of the UAE’s Flydubai airline arrived at Damascus International Airport on June 1, following years of suspension.
The General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport announced that Flydubai had begun operating direct flights from Dubai to Damascus as part of efforts to strengthen regional connectivity. This occurred after Damascus International Airport met all operational standards in cooperation with the relevant authorities.
Al Jazeera Airways is a private company established in 2004, headquartered in Kuwait, and operates with Kuwait International Airport as its main hub.
It is the first private airline established in Kuwait, operating on a low-cost carrier model, providing services to 18 destinations across the Middle East, South and West Asia, and Europe.
