A spectator who fell ill during Carlos Alcaraz’s Wimbledon first round win has received a touching message from the man himself.
Late on in his 7-5 6-7 [5-7] 7-5 2-6 6-1 victory against Fabio Fognini on Monday, he rushed to help a woman who took a turn in the Centre Court crowd.
Alcaraz was preparing for the fourth game in the fifth set when he noticed a commotion nearby as people began to help.
The Spaniard then showed his class by running over to collect one of his water bottles before passing it in the direction of the stricken fan.
One of the ball girls followed suit and the Wimbledon crowd gave a round of applause for their quick actions.
Paramedics were able to carry the spectator on a chair after a delay of almost 15 minutes.
And the daughter of the woman who fell ill took to social media to offer her thanks to Alcaraz for his support in the worrying scenes.
“Thank you Carlos Alcaraz for the concern shown to my mum today who was taken ill during your tennis match at Centre Court today,” Eluned Lewis said on X.
“Unlikely you’ll see this message but I can try! Thank you.”
Alcaraz did in fact see the message and responded with a heartfelt message of support.
“You’re very welcome, it was nothing! I hope your mum is doing well. Send her a kiss from me and take good care of her!” he responded.
It’s not known what caused the fan to fall ill but she was sitting in the sun on what was a blistering first day at the All England Club.
Paramedics, fans and officials all helped outGetty The spectator’s daughter reached out to Alcaraz, who replied with well wishesXWith an air temperature reading of 32.3 degrees Celsius, Monday was the hottest opening day in Wimbledon history.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Alcaraz was asked if the roof on Centre Court should be closed in high temperatures.
“Because of the sun, the heat, I think it shouldn’t close, because we will play in an outdoor tournament.
“The roof is just because if we can’t play in another way. Battling the heat, I think it’s one of the things that we have to do.
“The match can’t be in another way because of the heat, so I think we have to deal with it in the best way possible.
“Obviously for the fans, even here in London, they are not really used to having this weather.
Alcaraz will be back in action on Centre Court on WednesdayAFP“Sitting for five hours in the stands without moving and the sun hitting I think can be really difficult to deal with for the spectators.
“But we are playing an outdoor tournament, so I think that the roof shouldn’t be closed because of it.”
Alcaraz returns to Centre Court on Wednesday to face Briton Oliver Tarvet in the second round.
Tarvet, who is ranked 733rd in the world, qualified for the tournament before getting the better Swiss opponent Leandro Riedi in the first round.
