The weekend before a Red Flag warning was issued by the National Weather Service for the region, the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority completed a training burn at the Ukiah Municipal Airport that removed plenty of fire fuel from the dangerous mix of hot temperature and gusty winds.
In an effort designed to reduce the amount of fuel that can burn, but also get firefighters as ready as possible when the remaining vegetation catches fire, the city of Ukiah hosted a training burn that included firefighters from the UVFA, the Mendocino Unit of Cal Fire and the Hopland Fire Protection District.
The morning of June 28, a total of 27 acres were burned at the airport while the facility remained open, and the Cal Fire tankers stationed there still took off as needed.
Then this week, with lightning strikes possibly mixing with gusty winds before reaching any unburned dry fuels, the National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for inland Mendocino County Tuesday.
“Scattered thunderstorms were observed across the northern interior areas Monday with frequent lightning and gusty outflow winds,” staff at the Eureka office of the NWS wrote in their Forecast Discussion for Tuesday, July 2.” Another round of thunderstorms (was) expected to form Tuesday afternoon over mainly the interior, (and) these storms will be capable of abundant lightning (as well as) gusty, erratic winds, and hail.”
And while the NWS predicted that “wetting rain is expected in storm cores, lightning may still hit dry fuels away from the storms, (and) gusty outflow winds up to 50 mph will also pose a risk for fire spread.”
As for Monday’s storms, the NWS described them as “scattered thunderstorms across the interior mountains (which) moved towards the coast with lightning all along the coast between Orick and Crescent City, and peak gusts up to 60 mph with observed hail of up to 0.8 inches. Some stations reported up to 0.5 inches of rain, though precipitation was spotty at best.”
Then “a similar pattern will continue Tuesday as low pressure continues to move inland, (with) robust heating remaining over the interior with highs in the upper 90s, (and) another round of thunderstorms is likely (30%) Tuesday afternoon, but in comparison to Monday, steering flow and shear is much weaker, with models suggesting the most likely locations for storms to form will be over Southern Trinity County and Northern Mendocino County (especially the Yolla Bollys).”
Then after Tuesday, the NWS predicts that “a deep trough draping across the area will bring cooler temperatures with interior highs in the 80s. Weak high pressure will gradually return this weekend, though no more than moderate Heat Risk is expected through the weekend.”
The NWS issued a Red Flag Warning for the region including the interior of Mendocino County from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. July 2, as “fire weather danger has been enhanced by mid level moisture and instability, (but) the “hot, dry conditions (will) continue to ease for the next few days as low pressure morphs the ridging regime. High temperatures ease throughout the remainder of the week.”
