ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The University of Rochester has settled a class action lawsuit that seeks a partial tuition refund for students who learned remotely during the pandemic, court paperwork shows.
A U.S. District Court judge approved the preliminary settlement agreement and found that the plan to distribute the settlement fund is “fair and equitable”. We’re working to learn more about the plan, including how much money would go to students.
The lawsuit, Carstairs v. University of Rochester, argues that students who learned remotely during the spring, summer, or fall of 2020 are entitled to a partial refund on tuition or fees.
Under the preliminary approval, the UR must provide the settlement administrator with the list of people eligible for benefits within 20 days, according to paperwork. The settlement administration must then email the list of people within 28 days, who can either claim their benefits or opt out.
The final approval hearing will take place on Nov. 13. We’ve reached out to the UR for comment and for more details on the settlement. Check back for updates.
