Jimmy Eat World is stepping away from the stage after frontman Jim Adkins experienced a frightening medical emergency.
Adkins revealed that the band was preparing to perform at the Vans Warped Tour in Mexico City on Sunday, September 13, when he noticed something wasn’t right with his eyesight.
“Sunday, as we were preparing to play at Warped Tour in Mexico City I noticed a shadow cloud creeping in on my vision,” he wrote on Instagram two days later. “With some quick research, I knew I had to seek medical help immediately.”
View this post on InstagramAn examination revealed Adkins had a detached retina and needed surgery as soon as possible. Performing could have risked permanent damage, he explained, forcing the band to pull out of the festival. Thankfully, Adkins is now home and recovering after undergoing surgery.
But the medical emergency means the band will also miss two major festivals this week: Louder Than Life in Louisville, Kentucky, and Shaky Knees in Atlanta. Louder Than Life runs September 17-20 and features a massive rock and metal lineup including Iron Maiden, My Chemical Romance, Tool, and Pantera. Shaky Knees, meanwhile, takes over Atlanta’s Piedmont Park from September 18-20 and is already sold out.
“We are disappointed to be missing you,” Adkins told fans. “Take care of yourselves, listen to your body and we’ll be rocking with you all again soon!”

For the most part, fans were understanding and wished Adkin’s well.
“so happy that you listened to your body & got checked out – your health & recovery is the most important thing! get well soon ?,” one fan commented.
“We were sad you couldn’t play in Mexico City, but we would have been sadder if playing risked your health,” wrote another.
A third replied, “That’s so scary!! So glad you took the time to get checked out and got it fixed! Hope you heal up quick!”
Adkins’ quick decision to seek medical attention may have been especially important. According to the National Eye Institute, retinal detachment occurs when the retina (aka the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye) is pulled away from its normal position. Delaying treatment can increase the risk of permanent vision loss or blindness.
