The India Cricket Team will have a rare occasion in the IND vs ENG 2nd Test when they will go with two spinners in England. Gill admitted that an additional spinner in Leeds would have helped in the fourth innings. And learning from that, India are likely to go with two spinners at the Edgbaston. However, captain Shubman Gill has kept the suspense on the second tweaker. India have three spinners at their disposal — Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar.
Jadeja did not have a great time in Leeds despite bowling the most overs. With Kuldeep, India may have to sacrifice a pacer to accommodate the chinaman. If India go with Washington Sundar, it is likely that Jadeja would be dropped from India Playing XI.
“We felt in Leeds that an extra spinner would help contain the flow of runs, especially in the third or fourth innings. We would take the call this evening after assessing the pitch one last time. I don’t think it will be a direct swap, but it would not change the combination. We have decided on the spinner but want to see the pitch one last time,” Shubman Gill said at the pre-match press conference ahead of the IND vs ENG Edgbaston Test.
Who are India’s two spinners?
Ravindra Jadeja bowled 47 overs in two innings at Headingley but could only pick up a wicket. Although he was used as a holding spinner, he leaked runs at a 4.30 economy rate in the 2nd innings. That was far from being defensive. With the bat, Jadeja could only score 11 and 25, providing no cushion to India’s batting.
While Washington Sundar isn’t tried and tested in England, his recent form could help Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir make a decision. Sundar can bat longer. He scored a half-century in Melbourne, adding a 127-run stand with Nitish Reddy for the eighth wicket. But for him to come in, India have to drop Jadeja, who has struggled of late in SENA countries.
The other option that everyone has been raving about is Kuldeep Yadav. He has the backing of even former England captain Kevin Pietersen, who worked with him at Delhi Capitals. Even former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has backed him to feature in IND vs ENG Edgbaston Test.
“Kuldeep Yadav has to play. If there is not much grass, Kuldeep has to play. Drop anyone you want, but Kuldeep has to play. If he does play, the England tail also won’t score many runs. Kuldeep would help you win 2-3 Tests in the series as he would create problems,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, Ash ki baat.
