North Carolina will soon have a new athletic director.
The University announced on Tuesday morning that Bubba Cunningham will leave his current role as athletic director in the summer of 2026. Cunningham signed contract extension through 2029 as part of the announcement, but will transition to an advisor role next summer.
“As part of my last contract extension, I committed to working with University leadership on a succession plan that would positively position Carolina Athletics and our 28 teams for the future,” Cunningham said in a statement. “I appreciate the opportunity to extend my contract and enhance my role in a way that will allow me to continue to support our outstanding student-athletes, coaches and staff as we transition and navigate the changing athletics landscape. I am excited for the future.”
North Carolina also has its succession plan in place. The Tar Heels are hiring Steve Newmark to replace Cunningham next summer. Newmark’s roots are in NASCAR as he’s currently the President of Roush Fenway Keselowski (RFK) Racing.
Newmark is a Chapel Hill native. Prior to joining RFK Racing 15 years ago, Newmark specialized in sports and entertainment law for Charlotte-based firm Robinson Bradshaw & Hinson. According to UNC’s press release, he worked closely with the NCAA and SEC, amongst other entities. Newmark was also on the advisory committee that helped hire Bill Belichick this past offseason.
“Bubba is a national leader in his field, and his vision and dedication have helped Carolina Athletics reach new heights while navigating an unprecedented era,” Chancellor Lee H. Roberts said in a release. “We are excited to build on that success by incorporating Steve’s deep experience with strategic partnerships and sponsorships to build an even brighter future for Carolina Athletics.”
Cunningham has served as North Carolina’s athletic director since 2011.
