Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty warned that water scarcity is the primary existential threat to Egypt, during an interview with with TV host Lamis al-Hadidi on Monday.
Abdelatty affirmed that Egypt reserves the right to defend itself and its water interests if it is subjected to any threat.
The minister assured that Egypt will not allow, under any circumstances, any infringement on its historical share of the Nile waters.
“We must have complete confidence in the state and its institutions that they will not allow, under any circumstances, any infringement on this existential issue for Egypt,” he said.
Regarding plans for any new negotiations over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Abdelatty said that Egypt previously announced that the negotiating process with Ethiopia regarding the GERD had reached a dead end after 12 years.
The negotiations over the Ethiopian dam were used to impose a fait accompli and led nowhere, he said, emphasising that Egypt’s share of the Nile water is insufficient to meet its water needs.
“Our annual water needs exceed 90 billion cubic meters of water, while Egypt receives 55.5 billion cubic meters of Nile water,” Abdelatty said.
He explained that the average per capita share of water in Egypt is 50 percent of the minimum water poverty threshold declared by the United Nations, and that the Egyptian citizen’s share of water does not exceed 500 cubic meters annually, while the international water poverty threshold is 1,000 cubic meters.
