ROCHESTER, N.Y. – More than 120 golfers competed on Monday at Morgan’s Crossing, vying for a spot in the Rochester District Golf Association district championship, as just the top 48 golfers advanced to next month’s event.
Tournament director Ty McHerron said, “You’ll see people that have never played our events before, and they’re nervous and they’re freaking out and we’re just like, it’s a nice event, you’re going to go have fun. It’s not as heavy as the PGA Tour, but you can tell people get nervous.”
Angelo Latore and Jack Reichard, a pair of recent Penfield High School graduates, have played together for years, found themselves in a new competitive setting. “Yeah, I think it’s a little more of a mental grind than just playing with your boys,” Latore said.
Reichard said, “When you’re on the first tee and you look over and you see your buddy. Yeah, it definitely takes off a little bit of pressure.”
The three-round championship, scheduled to begin on July 31 at Cobblestone Creek, offers an opportunity for the golfers to showcase their skills. “It’s probably the most competitive tournament that we have in the Rochester area,” Reichard said.
McHerron emphasized the open nature of the competition, saying, “It’s not just the top 30 guys that you know are going to have a shot to win. Anyone can have a shot to win at the district championship.”
